Introduction continued (Part 2)
THE STRANGE CARGO RADIO SHOW
Our radio concept THE STRANGE CARGO RADIO SHOW was based around the premise that every mix should tell a story and being on Sunday afternoons the vibe was relatively chilled to start and on occasion building to a bit of a knees up.
We have sought to include as much relevant information on each track in each instance for your reference and usage and sub sections include current links to various resources across associated areas such as Blogs and YT channels worth keeping an eye on.
As the popularity in vinyl grows it seems proportionately we have an epidemic of interest from a variety of age groups concerned with what is fast becoming known as VINYL ARCHAEOLOGY, as a side contingent there is now also "Digital Digging"proving to be a cheap, accessible and highly rewarding past time / hobby for a growing number of people internationally. The growing number of subscribers to the relevant Facebook groups stand testament to this fact and to be honest it doesn't seem to be a thing showing signs of going away anytime soon!
This book will aim to assume no prior knowledge from the reader as it will seek to cover so many genres in an all encompassing sense. It should therefore prove ideal for either those looking to commence an interest in "crate digging", DJ'ing eclectically or just digging for samples and production usage.
There is a lot of musical history to be covered here and readers are encouraged to dissect all the relevant information of the tracks they "dig" as it were. Labels, Producers, Engineers, Drummers and studios can all be great links to other stuff and the task is literally Shaolin like in so much that no matter how hard you dig, there's always more digging to be done.
In this the first edition we will focus predominantly on English Lyrics based or instrumental music with just a sprinkling of feel good international stuff. In addition we will aim to include the guest selections "Desert Island Discs" from the STRANGE CARGO RADIO SHOW.
As with a lot of DJ or "Scene Orientated" music stuff there can often be an implied element of snobbery / arrogance and this book makes efforts to avoid any of this by keeping a sense of humour whilst abandoning musical preconceptions. This is not to say we don't have something here for the purists too, indeed we do and more than a sprinkling of timeless classics but in the same spirit as the radio show we aim to carve out a magical musical journey across the times and genres with reckless abandonment and an open mind.
We have committed to ensuring that every track included in this edition was truly worthy of note and what we would call "music of substance"or more simply (as most folks these days would recognise as just a "TUNE!"
Whether you are a seasoned vinyl aficionado or just a fledgling flea market funkateer we have aimed to bring you a wide range of digs from the world over and an awful lot of the stuff featured here is still available for low cost online. As such we would encourage you to keep, collect and cherish those notable musical moments that just jump out and echo throughout your life. As hobbies go its pretty absorbing with a ever growing community of like minded people and others to bounce ideas around / exchange information with.
We will also try to supplement this edition with 101 essential long players at the end for your own Sunday Sampling Sessions and include a bit of musical history for your perusal and enjoyment. Overall, if you are a fan of music that sides away from the mainstream then we would hope that you certainly find something to enjoy here!

As much as anything this book is an ode to the timeless concept of the mix-tape and within which historically brave ambiguity has often won over an audience. Of course, dropping it at the right exact point is way more than half the battle there, but our aim is to give you the musical artillery to craft some of your very own magical musical journeys across the far side of groove and chill. Paul Oakenfold dropping Tchaikovsky's overture during the peak of acid house is the epitome of knowing when and where you can spectacularly get away with what.
We will include a brief history of the DJ alongside major technological and studio advancements which altered the music scene/s significantly. We further have utilised a simple A - Z format by artist name. Those seeking genre specific beats can utilise the key codes included at the end for ease. From below 80 bpm to over 160 bpm this snapshot of musical history is definitely for the open minded audio enthusiast and hopefully providing something for everyone!
Following no particular format other than it must be considered "Music of Substance", we will surf the genres with reckless abandonment and in the hope of revealing some lost treasure for your audio entertainment. We have also included timeless classics especially for novice diggers seeking some musical history. Of course we totally recommend you go and support the artist/s and labels directly, it's a tough world for many out there musically and we are sure your support appreciated!
Buy the music whenever and wherever you can, we won't judge you for utilising other means to hear it, but we totally recommend that you do. In order to ensure this is an easy an option to appease one and all, we will seek to include links (wherever possible) via our own blog;
Where you can also find a whole heap of various mixes, across the genres from commercial to totally way out. There's a lot of historic track listings and resources to other blogs of note there too. There's also a few cool cult movie recommendations and some international recipes for you to try too!
What classifies a "dig"? Well as ever a certain amount of personal taste and intended usage is implied but for the purpose of this directory we will include anything with at least a 30 second "break" or interlude i.e Usable in DJ'ing terms as per THE STRANGE CARGO RADIO SHOW's own personal digging ethos. As sample hunters and break aficionado's will be aware that in real terms a quality dig can or find can in fact be much shorter than that.
We have managed to rope in the service and advice from a number of cool DJ's, Collectors, Producers, Radio Station Owners and Vinyl Addicts to enhance this guide and in each case asked them to submit their TOP TWENTY for a Sunday Afternoon's Eclectic Playlist. Many are already seasoned guest selectors via past radio shows and fully integrated within the digging, collecting and DJ scene. Rather than opt for big commercial names to offer submissions we have opted to stick with those tried and tested, known and loved personally for their "out there" taste in musical diversity.
Our methodology for selecting the 1001 eclectic adventures for this series is via past shows, combined with recent finds / purchases and guest submissions, meaning that even seasoned fans of the
show can still find FRESH and exciting new / retro stuff here.
We have opted for no more than 5 tracks from any single artist here or indeed any more than 5 versions of the same track. Obviously there is often a lot more than that out there to be found for the really intrepid explorer and we applaud all those that do take the time and trouble to hunt them all down. That said, every effort will be made here from the outset to honestly try and bring you only the top 5 in any instance and as best as we are able. Obviously in the main music is subjective and tastes will undoubtedly differ as in all things, but we would hope fans of THE STRANGE CARGO RADIO SHOW appreciate what we would honestly and wholeheartedly consider to be the veritable "cream of the crop" presented here for your audio enjoyment and further investigation.
